Syracuse Community Connections
Syracuse Community Connections (SCC) offers a range of services aimed at addressing food insecurity, basic needs, and infant care items. SCC thrives on the generosity of community members, with donations supporting various initiatives, including youth and older adult programs.
Syracuse University’s Office of Community Engagement
The Office of Community Engagement at Syracuse University collaborates with local organizations to create opportunities for genuine collaboration and meaningful change. Programs like the Thursday Morning Roundtable bring diverse voices together to discuss pressing community issues, while initiatives such as the Food Insecurity Awareness Initiative combat food insecurity on campus and throughout Central New York. These efforts highlight the university’s dedication to being an active partner in community development.
Bread and Roses Collective
The Bread and Roses Collective provides a model of cooperative living and ecological sustainability in the heart of the city. With two houses linked by a half-acre of land in the Westcott neighborhood, the collective practices “Food, not Lawns” by converting much of their yard into intensive vegetable gardens and edible landscaping. This initiative not only promotes sustainable living but also fosters a sense of community among residents.
Creek Rats
Since 2002, Creek Rats, Inc. has been engaging the community in restoring Onondaga Creek as a valued resource. By organizing events and projects, they promote civic engagement and environmental stewardship. Their efforts have led to the creation of limited-use recreation and green-space areas, contributing to the revitalization of the urban environment in Syracuse.
Proud Places Project
The Proud Places Project aims to strengthen investment in city neighborhoods through citizen engagement, beautification, and community stewardship. The program’s goal is to increase neighbor participation in making streetscape and property improvements, demonstrating the city’s commitment to fostering a network of community care and neighborhood pride. The first campaign along the Butternut Street Corridor has already seen significant community involvement and positive changes.
These organizations exemplify the spirit of community engagement and development in Syracuse. Their dedication to improving our neighborhoods through various initiatives not only enhances the physical environment but also strengthens the social fabric of our city. As residents, supporting and participating in these programs can lead to a more vibrant and connected community for all.
